Redundancy money mix-up
Question
I was made redundant over a year ago. I was given a redundancy package but have only recently gone through all the paperwork. It looks like I was underpaid by over £1000 because of a mix-up the company made with tax. Is there any way I can get the money back?
Answer
You can get your money back but you might have to go to the small claims court to get it. Your first approach should be to write to the company pointing out the mistake. You should also include a copy of your final payslip so they can see an error has been made and you are owed this money.
If this fails, you would then need to consider going to court to make the claim. The Court Service provides a wide range of leaflets about how to make a claim and it is also possible to make a claim online.
Before you do this it might be useful for you to talk your claim through with a solicitor that offers a free first interview, or your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) or Law Centre.
