Black balled?

Question

Ive just moved into a new house and tried to order a catalogue, but have been refused because of my credit rating. Ive never had a problem with my credit rating before, so could it be because of my new address?

Answer

Under the Credit Scoring Scheme, drawn up in 1993 and updated in 2000, companies offering credit are not allowed to redline or blacklist a particular property and should only score individuals. The process of redlining is where a whole area or location is charged extra for or denied services. If you believe that your property has been redlined you may want to make a complaint to your local trading standards office or the Office of Fair Trading.

To check and see if there is anything on your credit record that is causing this you may want to contact the main credit reference agencies to check your history and if there are any issues get them to correct them. There is a charge of £2 to check you file. The main agencies are Experian, Equifax and Callcredit.

If you still have trouble, you may want to contact your local CAB for more advice about your particular case.
