Sixth sense?

Question

I've just gone into the sixth form and the school is forcing me to do PE after school. A teacher told me that it's the law that sixth formers have to do PE - is that true?

Also, is it too late for me to apply for a sixth form college?

Answer

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) say that nothing in the sixth form is compulsory in law because sixth form is a non-compulsory part of education. But each school has its own rules and regulations that pupils are obliged to comply with, and that could include, as in your case, doing PE.

As to moving from school to a college, your ability to move will depend on a number of factors:

  • Does the college have space for you?
  • Are they offering the same courses from the same exam boards as the school?
  • If there is space, when will you be able to move?

If you are not able to move this year, you might want to consider taking time out and starting at college next September.
