I'm a very active person and look after myself well, but lately I've wanted to improve my body shape. I hate the idea of gyms but thought I'd be able to get over it, so I signed a 12-month contract.

When I arrived at the gym it was really busy and I was too late to have my induction. All I could think about was getting out of the place. I felt ill at the thought of being there and didn't even make it to the fitness room. On the way home I was crying and almost hyper-ventilating.

I don't understand why it happened - I'm usually a happy, strong person who can deal with new situations really well. It's come as a shock that I can't handle standing in the reception area of a fitness club. I'm going next week, but I'm worried it may happen again.

It sounds like the experience you had at the fitness club was distressing and has left you feeling very upset.  From what you say, feeling so uncomfortable in a new situation is not something you are used to. It's understandable you are concerned about what happened and whether it will happen again when you go back.

It's good to hear you're looking after your physical fitness and seeking professional guidance in terms of your body shape. You say you really hate gyms, so signing up to one for 12 months is a big step forward. Many people feel nervous about going along to a gym. Sometimes this may be because of low self-esteem and confidence, particularly concerning their body image.

You say you are usually a happy, strong person who can deal with situations really well. Sometimes being in a busy place can exacerbate nervousness and lead to feelings of panic and anxiety. No More Panic offers very comprehensive information, support and advice, which may be of interest to you.

If you find the symptoms persist, like difficulty breathing, it may be worth discussing your situation with your doctor (GP). They will be able to explore any appropriate support or treatment options for you.
