Question

I'd really like to start eating a balanced diet, but I don't seem to be able to find comprehensive information about the things I should and shouldn't be eating. Can you help?

Answer

It is great that you are trying to find out which foods are good for you so you can have a balanced diet.

What we eat can greatly affect our health. A balanced diet should contain food from the five different food groups:

  • Fruit and vegetables;
  • Bread, cereal and potatoes;
  • Meat and fish and pulses;
  • Milk and dairy foods;
  • Fat and sugar.

As for specific foods, there is an article on the NetDoctor website that outlines the vitamins and minerals needed to remain healthy, and lists examples of good food sources for each. The website also allows you to test yourself to see if you are eating a well balanced diet already.

You may also find it useful to check out the British Nutrition Foundation website, as it has lots of information about healthy eating, including advice on the foods you should be eating to achieve a balanced diet.
