Toothpaste face

Question

I've got really bad spots and some friends recommended that I try using toothpaste on them. Can this really help?

Answer

Some people do put toothpaste on their spots because they find it helps to dry them out. You need to be careful though, it's possible the drying effect of toothpaste could irritate your skin.

There are lots of other suggestions for how to cope with acne, these include:

  • Try an over-the-counter product containing benzoyl peroxide, but if that doesn't work within two months see your local doctor (GP);
  • Doctor's can prescribe specific medication to help tackle the bacterial growth that causes the problem. If, after six months, the problem is still severe then ask your GP for an appointment with a dermatologist who can prescribe further treatment;
  • Sunlight can play a part in treating acne by encouraging the skin to peel and drying up excess grease. But it can also be harmful to the skin so think moderation, and use a sunscreen in milk or cream form so as not to clog pores;
  • Avoid washing excessively, acne is not caused by dirty skin. Try to wash twice a day with mild soap and water and avoid moisturiser.
