Tattoo trauma

Question

I had a tattoo done on my back two years ago, but the skin where it's been done is now quite lumpy. Surely this isn't meant to happen?

Answer

If the lumpiness on your tattoo comes and goes then it could be being caused by an outside factor. Some people find the skin under their tattoo can turn lumpy when it is exposed to sun or hot weather. This is quite common.

If, however, it is permanently lumpy, it could be the result of scarring. There are types of scarring that leave the skin lumpy, such as keloid scarring, which can sometimes result from tattooing.

Another possible reason is an allergic reaction to the inks used in the tattoo.

If you think the lumpiness could be a sign of scarring, or an allergic reaction then speak to your local doctor (GP) about the problem.
