Spasmodic support

Question

I've been diagnoised with spasmodic torticolis. I've spoken to my doctor but was wondering if you had anymore information about the condition?

Answer

We're very sorry to hear that you've had this diagnoisis. Hopefully some of the information and links below will help you gain a better understanding of the condition.

Cervical dystonia, also known as spasmodic torticollis, is a condition where neck muscles contract involuntarily causing abnormal movements of the neck and head.

There is currently no cure for dystonia, but there are a large number of treatments available. Finding the right treatment may take time and patience, not everybody will respond to the same dosage or drug.

Botulinum toxin injections are used to control dystonia. Other types of treatment include anticholinergic drugs, benzodiazepine drugs, dopamine antagonists and agonist drugs and cocktail therapy. Some people find complementary therapies helpful. Surgery may also be considered in the most severe of cases.

As well as consulting further with your local doctor (GP), for more advice and support you could ring the Dystonia Society helpline on 0845 458 6322.
