Sleep shakes

Question

When I'm falling asleep I sometimes feel a rush of adrenalin and then wake up with my body shaking. Do you have any idea what this is?

Answer

Most people experience 'the shakes' from time to time, often as a result of factors such as excessive tiredness, stress or anxiety. In fact, everyone experiences what is know as physiological tremor to some degree. This may be the sensation you're referring to.

Though you might not normally be aware of your tremor, it can become exaggerated by factors like those mentioned above. You mention you feel an adrenalin rush, and this is consistent with experiencing tremors, because raised adrenalin levels can cause the problem.

For further information about normal tremor, you can visit the National Tremor Foundation website. Alternatively, to put your mind at rest, consider speaking to your local doctor (GP) about the problem.
