Prickly pickle
Question
I'm going on holiday soon and I always get prickly heat. I've read lots of information about this, but I still don't know what suncream I should use, as it can apparently make the condition worse by trapping the moisture under the skin. But I can't sunbathe without any protection, so I'm not sure what I can do. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer
Miliaria, or prickly heat as it's more commonly known, occurs when perspiration increases due to hot and humid conditions. Sweat glands can become blocked with dead skin cells, and this can cause an inflammation, which can blister. It usually lasts no longer than a few days, although can be prolonged if you're in very humid conditions.
Don't despair, though - there are a number of precautions you can take to prevent prickly heat. Wearing loose cotton clothing, keeping rooms cool and taking cool baths and showers can all help prevent an outbreak.
If you do get an outbreak you could try an antihistamine cream or medication to relieve the itching. You could also try calamine lotion or a natural oatmeal-based cream, which can be soothing. You should always follow the instructions. Your local pharmacist will be able to advise you further about these. If you find the rash still hasn't gone you should visit your local doctor (GP) who may be able to prescribe you a mild steroid cream to soothe the irritation.
It's difficult to recommend a particular sunscreen to use, as what works well for one person might not work for another. It might be worth your while looking out for products for sensitive skin. Your GP or local pharmacist should be able to recommend a product.
