Pouring pores
Question
Since my early teens I've had a serious problem with sweating. At the moment I sweat no matter what I do. It's ruining my clothes and has destroyed my self-esteem.
I've tried every deodorant I can find but nothing has made it better. Can you suggest anything else that might help?
Answer
About 1% of the population has a condition known as hyperhidrosis, the medical term for excessive sweating. This is classed as a medical condition in its own right. There could be a number of causes behind your sweating problem and it would be useful for you to speak to your local doctor (GP) about it. This will give you a chance to work out the sort of treatments available to you and discuss the possible causes of the problem.
Although you've said that you have used many types of deodorants, it's unclear which specific ones you've tried so it's worth knowing that every stone may not yet be unturned. There are a number of treatment options you can explore, including preparations available from pharmacies. As these are more powerful than regular antiperspirants, they need to be applied only as directed.
As for other treatment options, botox can be injected into the armpit to temporarily stop sweating. It works by decreasing the activity of the sweat glands. There are also surgical procedures available. Your doctor will be able to advise on whether these treatments are appropriate for you, and refer you on to a specialist if required.
Although it's no surprise that the sweating is causing your low self-esteem, you may find getting stressed about it could also be causing you to sweat more. If this is the case, it might be possible that some relaxation therapies could be helpful to you.
