Memory loss
Question
Over the past few months my memory seems to have been getting worse and worse. It started with questioning if I'd locked the door, turned off a light, turned off my hair straighteners, etc. But now it's got to the point where it's affecting my work. I can't remember speaking to people and it makes me look like I'm lazy or not up to the job. I'm getting very stressed about it all. What can I do?
Answer
Memory loss always feels worrying but it can be caused by many different things.
Stress is the most common cause of memory loss. Indeed, the anxiety that you are feeling about forgetting things might actually be contributing to your forgetfulness and perpetuating the cycle. Stress can be difficult to overcome, but it is possible.
Other factors that can cause memory loss include:
- Mental health problems such as depression;
- Drugs and alcohol;
- Head injury.
There are also a variety of medical conditions associated with memory loss, including dementia (this normally only affects older people), viral infections, vitamin deficiency and liver disease.
So, while there might be action that you can take yourself, it could be worth visiting your local doctor (GP) to discuss the problem in more detail.
