Ingrown irritant

Question

I've recently waxed my upper lip a few times and each time I get spots where Ive waxed. Is it possible they could be ingrown hairs? If they are, how can I stop this happening?

Answer

An ingrown hair is hair that has become trapped beneath the skin. Since it's still growing they can become infected, resembling acne. Facial ingrown hairs are not uncommon in women but are generally more likely to be experienced by men who shave regularly.

It's best to get ingrown hairs examined by your doctor or dermatologist. They may prescribe you a treatment that is antibacterial and will reduce any inflammation. In the meantime, try not to pick at the ingrown hair, no matter how tempting, as it can result in scarring and infection.

You could try gently exfoliating on a daily basis (unless the skin is inflamed or infected). You can buy various facial scrubs from your local supermarket or chemist. Ask for advice from an assistant if you are unsure.

There are many different methods of hair removal for women and some of the alternatives to waxing, such as bleaching, laser treatment or electrolysis may help prevent this problem in the future.

Finally, if you've only begun to develop excess facial hair recently, then consider talking to your local doctor (GP), as it may be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
