Cloudy pee

Question

I'm a 17 year-old girl and I've got a problem when I pee. Basically, it's really cloudy. It doesn't hurt or anything but could it be the sign of something wrong?

Answer

Cloudy urine may indicate the presence of normal vaginal mucus, though it could show something more serious.

Cystitis is an infection of the bladder and urinary system and one of the symptoms can be cloudy or foul smelling urine, along with burning sensation during urination, and the need to urinate more often.

Drinking plenty of water can help to reduce your chances of having problems with urine infections in the future.

It may also be a symptom of thrush, so if you're also experiencing any irritation, a thick white discharge, itching or soreness, then it's important to mention this to your local doctor (GP).

If you are currently taking medication, this may cause your urine to appear cloudy. Check any information that came with your medication to see if this is listed as a possible side effect. If this is the case it should be mentioned to your doctor at the next opportunity.

To put your mind at rest it's probably a good idea to see your GP who can arrange for a urine sample to be sent for analysis. This will reveal any infections or problems and will allow your doctor to treat the problem.
