It's difficult to generalise about why people take drugs - everyone has their own reasons. The best way to find out why someone is taking drugs is to talk to them about it.
You've probably heard many of the reasons why people take drugs: it might make them feel good; there might be peer pressure; they might be trying to escape from their problems; or they might be curious. Often there is more than one explanation and it's worth knowing that the reasons why someone continues to take a drug might change the longer they keep using it.
If someone has been using drugs for a long time they might have become dependent or addicted. This can make giving up both physically and emotionally painful but there are a number of different types of treatment available to people who want to come off drugs.
