Lethal lighter fluid?

Question

I know you can get a buzz from sniffing solvents such as lighter fluid. I'm also aware that this is dangerous, but can it kill if poured directly down the throat?

Answer

A drug doesn't have to be illegal to be dangerous, and solvents (gases, aerosols and glue) are a case in point. Lighter fluid, for example, can be abused even though it is available to buy from most shops.

In some cases, such as when poured directly into the throat, it can have lethal consequences. This is because it can cause the body to produce fluid that floods the lungs, leading to instant death. So, the smart move is not to risk it at all.

As solvent abuse is such a high-risk activity, it's important that you get access to clear, balanced advice and information. For all the facts, check out the website for Re-solv or call their helpline, anonymously and in confidence, on 0808 800 2345.
