Ill from pills?

Question

I took three pills last night, and I've woken up this morning with heart palpitations. I only got one hour's sleep, so could this be the cause rather than the drugs?

Answer

Without knowing what kind of pills you took, it's impossible to know what has caused the palpitations - if you are concerned you should contact your local doctor (GP) or call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 for a professional medical opinion.

Amphetamines (also known as speed), ecstasy or other stimulants are the mostly likely drugs to cause the palpitations.

Palpitations could have been caused by a lack of sleep and food or dehydration. Too much caffeine or nicotine, can also contribute to what you're going through. The important thing is not to panic, but to make your welfare a priority.

Going without food, water or rest can worsen potential side-effects from drug use, so be sure to look after these basic needs.

It would be a good idea for you to find out more about the risks and effects of the pills you took. If you would like to have a free and confidential chat about any concerns you may have about drugs contact Frank on 0800 776600.
