How dangerous is the drug GHB?

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a colourless, odourless, salty tasting liquid that often comes in small bottles and capsules. It can increase sociability, lower inhibitions, and bring on a state of euphoria. The effects can take anywhere between 10 minutes and an hour to kick in, and have been known to last for a day.
Taken on its own, high doses can cause nausea, muscle stiffness, vomiting, confusion and convulsions. In some cases it can lead to coma and respiratory collapse. The biggest problem comes from mixing GHB with alcohol and other drugs - this can be extremely dangerous and even fatal. Asthmatics and those with respiratory problems or low blood pressure should avoid GHB because of its depressant effects.
There may also be long term dangers in using GHB, but these are not yet fully understood.
