Getting clean

Question

Is it safe to try and come off drugs without the help of a doctor or specialist?

Answer

It's often difficult to choose the best way to stop using drugs. Some people like to do it on their own and others like to get some support. The best thing is to make sure you feel safe and supported while trying to stop. This will increase your chances of staying off the drugs.

Whether or not you need to see a doctor depends on what kind of drugs you are using and how long and how much you have been using. There are a lot of risks and effects from drug use and it is always a good idea to get a health check just to make sure that everything is alright. You can call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 for information and advice about staying healthy.

Some people do stop using drugs without seeing a doctor. However, it's important you get some support from a drug service and they can help you to decide whether or not you need to see your local doctor (GP). You can get free and confidential support from services in your area and this will give you a chance to develop a plan on how to stop.

If you can't decide whether to see a specialist or not, call Frank on 0800 77 66 00. They can give you free and confidential advice and information about drugs. You can get information about drug services and what to expect when you go.
